Grandson of two painters and the son of another, Galen Mercer was born in 1962 in Toronto, Ontario. He has been painting professionally since his late teens. After graduating from fine arts school, Galen opted for a life combining art and sport, gravitating toward New York’s Catskill Mountains, then the Green Mountains in Vermont.
Among the most accomplished sporting and landscape artists of his generation, Galen takes as his subject the whirl and innate vitality of nature. He has traveled and painted throughout the globe, including Quebec, British Columbia, Iceland, Russia, the Central Pacific, Argentina, the British Isles and France, while also building a considerable body of work featuring his first love, America’s richly varied lands and waters.
His paintings, avidly sought for more than two decades, and held in numerous private collections worldwide, appear frequently in books, publications and E-magazines. In addition to group shows, Galen has exhibitied at venues such as the American Museum of Fly Fishing, Laurence Rockefeller’s Beaverkill Gallery and, most recently, Stephen O’Brien Fine Art in Boston, Mass. His paintings may be viewed at his website or through several dealers, among them Peter Villa Fine Art and J.N Bartfield of Manhattan, and Stephen O’Brien Fine Art of Boston.
Galen and his wife Jaimie live in Arlington, Vermont, where he keeps his present studio.
