Upstream Plus Series

Fly Rods

The Douglas Upstream Plus Fly Rod Series provides more power than the Douglas Upstream. It gives the angler a solid up-locking reel seat for fighting larger fish. Most importantly, it provides a slightly faster action that makes the Upstream PLUS a great choice for people who want enough muscle to land the fish of a lifetime and enough finesse to use the tippet and flies required in tough, technical situations.

The Douglas Upstream Fly Rod Series are very special rods. It’s just the right size, with just the right flex. If you need to protect light tippets, if you’re casting the whole line or short distances, if you’re fishing to spooky trout where delicacy is required, if you need precise cast between 20 and 70 feet, these rods can get it all done. The Upstream Plus Fly Rods are a casters dream. The time and effort spent fighting with your rods to make the right cast is a thing of the past.

I am not one for leaving reviews on products; it’s just not my thing. However, this rod is one that I felt I must leave feedback on. But first, I wanted to make sure I had it out on the water prior to leaving the review. Now that this rod has been in action, here is my review: I have been fly fishing for almost 3 years now and felt it was time to upgrade myself with a good quality 5wt rod. Personally, I have steered clear of Douglas only because I thought that they were all extremely high priced rods due to the SKY G series. Take it from me, don’t let the price tag of the SKY G deter you from looking and purchasing a different Douglas fly rod. When this rod arrived, I was extremely excited to unpackage it. I had purchased the Upstream+ 5wt fly rod. As I’m pulling the rod tube out of the box, I was quite impressed with the quality of the tube itself and the fact that the tube lid secures nicely as a screw-on top. Here’s where my wife noticed my excitement; as I removed the rod from the rod sock, instantly I fell in love with this rod…from the cork handle, cork reel seat and hardware, along with the blanks and ferrules. I could not help myself except to smile from ear to ear…as my wife mentioned, “this is the excitement I expect from you when you are getting your fishing gear!” The look of this rod reminds me of throwbacks, not the modern era fly rod. I understand that the color of the blanks is not for everyone, but I’m also not them. I like things that remind me of older, back in the day items. And instantly, I fell in love with the color of this rod. I even love it more now that I have it paired with the Hardy Ultraclick fly reel. My decision on this was not to ensure the perfect balance possible, but to provide the lightest fly/reel combo possible to my liking (my liking also includes the looks). I own three 3wt rods, now three 5wt rods, and one 8wt rod on the way. None of my other rods made me feel this excited before. Happy, yes; but extremely excited…no! By no means am I a master or professional fly fisher, nor do I pretend to know and think I understand all the terminology that is out there…because I don’t. But what I do know is if a rod has great “feeling” when playing fish. I mainly bought this rod for my small streamer setup in order to tackle smallmouth bass in PA rivers. I can tell you, this rod did not disappoint! The UPSTREAM+ 5wt definitely has the power to throw out small streamers about 40-50 ft…probably farther if a better caster was behind the rod. But to my biggest surprise and enjoyment, was the great “feeling” of the rod fighting the fish while landing it. I had an 8 inch smallmouth doing laps around me pulling this rod, and the feel was just phenomenal and nothing I’ve experienced with stiffer rods. I love the feel of it and the continued excitement it brings me every trip out! I am still working to see if I can find any flaws with this rod. But when purchasing with reading and researching the details of it, my expectations were set, met and exceeded with this rod. If you are looking for a 5wt all-around fly rod, I highly recommend consideration of the DOUGLAS UPSTREAM+. Truly a phenomenal rod, and a true beauty in person. Pics do not do this piece of art any justice!

The Upstream Plus series of rods are simply a joy to fish. There are a few rods I get really excited to use, and this is one of them. The action of this rod sits right there in the middle, not the noodle-like feel that comes with a glass rod, yet not fast and furious like a lot of the newer rods coming out in this day and age. Being a nine-foot five-weight, this rod can really do a lot, from slinging small streamers and light nymph rigs, but where this rod shines, in my opinion, is its dry fly fishing ability. The rod has enough power to push the fly where it needs to go, yet has a suppleness to it that allows for precise, subtle presentations needed for picky trout. To top it off, its gold finish, full wells grip, and old school feral design make it just as beautiful to look at as it is to fish.
